Gold Prices in a Range of Major Currencies

Consider an ounce of gold as a fixed unit of value. Your particular location in the world has no relevance or impact on an ounce of gold. For example, if you purchased a meter ruler in the United States and took it with you on a trip to Europe, it still measures a meter of distance. The ruler has not changed just because you took it to another country. In the same way, an ounce of gold in the United States is no different to an ounce of gold in Europe or Asia or anywhere else. It is a fixed measure of value.

What does vary is the value of the currencies that the gold is priced in. So, on first inspection, the price of gold appears to change daily in U.S. dollars or Euros etc. However, the ounce of gold does not change daily, it is the value of the currencies which move up and down to reflect economic factors.

As a result, it is important to review the gold price across a range of major currencies rather than solely focusing on the gold price in U.S. dollars. If the gold price is rising in several major currencies at the same time, it is a strong indication that investors favour gold are converting their particular currencies into gold. This trend indicates that the price of gold will continue to rise.

However, if the price of gold is rising in Euros, but falling in the other major currencies, this is an indication that the Euro is falling in value rather than a global rise in the gold price. So as a minimum, keep an eye on the gold price in your own national currency in addition to the gold price denominated in U.S. dollars.
